I began my educational journey with the goal of becoming a sports broadcaster. However, after learning that I would likely have to start at a small, remote station, I decided to shift my focus to something that felt more purposeful—working with youth. In 1999, I started my career in human services as a Therapeutic Support Staff (TSS) worker, providing one-on-one support to children of all ages with various diagnoses. Over the next four years, this role ignited a deep passion within me to help children and their families thrive. This passion led me to a role within the foster care system, where I was responsible for identifying suitable homes for children in need. That experience gave me a greater understanding of family dynamics and inspired me to pursue a position as a SCOH (Services to Children in Their Own Homes) worker. In this role, I supported families in creating structure and stability within their households. As I continued my work, I witnessed several youth in my community struggling to find direction. Wanting to intervene and make a difference, I took on a position as an In-Home Detention Worker, where I mentored young people, helped them re-enroll in school, and supported them in turning their lives around. I also had the opportunity to work at the Community Evening Resource Center (CERC)—a safe, structured environment for youth during after-school hours. At CERC, I facilitated programming designed to promote accountability, life skills, and personal growth, while also helping participants stay connected to school and their communities. Through these roles, I came to realize that many challenges youth face begin with inconsistent school attendance. This led me to my current role as a Truancy Worker, where I collaborate closely with students and families to promote daily attendance, academic success, and long-term stability. My goal is to empower youth to stay on track and equip families with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to build a brighter future. |
